Back in the Day

There's something very 1930's to me about a dishpan. I don't know why that object in particular. But for me it conjures up the Waltons, Edna Spaulding in Places in the Heart, and my own grandmother. She was still using a dishpan even into the sixties.

A dishpan is just so practical. Both before a meal and after. Today I used it to carry my dishes out on the lawn. After they've been used, they can go right back in again. I could even pour hot water in it and wash them.

Life was hard in those days, but in many ways I think folks might have been smarter then. . . .

I think this cloth is late thirties/early forties.

Vintage Americana glassware by Fostoria.

Vintage ironstone bowls, pitcher, and enamelware dishpan.

Vintage hand crochet napkins peaking like whipped cream in a soda glass.

Love this cookbook from the Savannah bakery "Back in the Day." It's SO vintage!

Vintage basket patterned quilt. I didn't have a centerpiece, and this makes a nice backdrop for everything.

My vintage Belgian duvet cover as an underskirt again.

Wedgewood Hedge Rose dinner plates, and white majolica salads.

I hope you enjoyed going "Back in the Day" with me!
And I hope your week is going great!

Jacqueline

  6. My grandmother was still using her dishpan when she died in 1988. Why didn't I bring it home when the house was closed? I hadn't thought about that dishpan for years -- thanks for bringing up that fond memory. Sally

  7. Hello Jacqueline

Your dishpan brought back beautiful, fond memories of my late Aunt Helen, who lived in Long Island. Like your beautiful images, she was a meticulous housekeeper and designer.

I love the quilt with the aqua baskets. I had a similar one with red baskets one time.

Thanks for asking, my week is going great.

  8. My grandmother used a dish pan. She never used liquid dish soap. She mixed Blue Cheer with grated Fels Naptha and Borax. I can still smell her bubbly dishpan.

    Everything is lovely, Jacquline~

  11. I LOVED Every detail!!! Yes, my Grandmother AND Mother both used those dishpans! I also remember the multitasks they preformed. Mom had a Maytag Wringer Washer and our kitchen had a set-tub...Our kitchen sink hung on the wall...I think back now of HOW WONDERFUL that picture all seems in my mind. BUT we were so excited when we got our NEW MODERN KITCHEN. "DARN, I wish I had all those golden oldies, hehe"!
Love all your goodies here, I'm going to be adding a washbasin to my WISHLIST(thank you for the memories).
    Have a fun week,
I HOPE THIS POSTS for me!!!
    Hugs,
    Donna

  13. Hi Jacqueline: Great dishpan and I was reading all your comments and their stories about the dishpan. I remember having to wash dishes in one. My sister and I would take turns, one wash and one dry. The problem was that she always had to go to the bathroom when it was her turn to wash. Of course, she always tells the story the other way around..Happy Thursday..Judy

  14. I did enjoy it,and we always use what we call here a washing up bowl. Because we live in such a dry part of Australia,we collect every drop of water. It gets, along with the dish water emptied onto our garden. x

  28. Jacqueline,
Another "walk down memory lane" for me with this post! My beloved Mother ~in~law used a dishpan for E V E R Y T H I N G when I first entered "The Family"! No dishwasher heard of a the "Family Farm"...we did them by hand!!! Some of my fondest days are doing dishes with Mary...that's where I learned all the "Family Secrets". . and we're NOT talking about recipe exchange here, no ma'am!
She plucked chickens in that dishpan; snap green beans in that dishpan; washed her undies in that dishpan; even mixed up popcorn balls in that dishpan!
I adore the use of your vintage Belgian duvet cover under the retro tablecloth! The hues are harmonious and compliment each other as old feed sacks and prints! Thank you for another thought provoking post!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  30. Love your pictures, Jacqueline. I remember my grandmother using those basins. Whenever I see one, I think of her.
Those were the days! Simplicity, the smell of fresh bread wafting through the house, and fresh churned butter! She probably plucked chickens in one of those pans too. My memory is starting to fade but I remember her well! Wonderful post. Have a nice weekend.

    Blessings,

  34. First of all, I love all your linens. Yes, I remember my mom using a dishpan in the sink and I remember the old Joy dish soap in the white bottle with Joy spelled in primary colors. I also remember her using the dishpan for other chores too. I have a couple I found at flea markets and use them as plant containers.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  39. What a beautiful table!
So clean and fresh looking, and with those darling cherries on the cloth -- fabulous.
This really brings back memories for me. When I was a child, we summered on Long Island in a little seaside bungalow, with family all around us -- and all the "great aunts" and grandmas had this style of cloth, and glassware, heavy white plates, etc. --- their summer things.

Wonderful memories of beautiful times. Thanks for reminding me!
