A Charmed Up Utility Room~Farmhouse Style

I've made a rather dramatic switch from the romance of my last post, to the mundane. It doesn't get more down to earth than a utility room. I was tempted to use the word laundry for this space, but that turns out to be too romantic a word for this eensy space.

We recently replaced our hot water heater, and the change necessitated the removal of a very small freezer that we had in here. It was the smallest freezer on the market (probably in the world), and served us well when the whole family still lived in town. But those days are past.

After the freezer left, I couldn't stand the thought of bringing it back in. We live in a charming little house, but there are tiny rooms, and very little storage. The before picture is below, taken right after the work was finished, and a few things shoved back into the room.

This, was replaced with. . .

...this.
A chippy Canton, Texas table, a wood soap box that I found two days ago, and a fleamarket basket. We're working with some serious backlighting here, so the first thing I did was hang a curtain.

Two nails, and a netted lace runner later. . . .

Voila!

The curtain shields a bad view, but still lets the sunlight in.

The box will keep loads of stuff on hand while giving me that time travel feeling. But I wish I could keep plants here.

I'd love to do a table skirt at some point. I could hide even more away under here.

For now, the basket stows paper products that we buy in large quantities.

It's dressed up with a lace edged valance from the thrift store.

There's a lot of wall space to dress up too if I want.

I found this wonderful old jar for in here the same day. I love the rusty old clasp.

The glass lid is turning purple.

If I squint my eyes a little against the light I can imagine I'm in an old farmhouse.

A real tiny one. . . .

Thanks so much for coming by for a peek!
I appreciate you stopping by to say hello.

Jacqueline

  1. Jacqueline,
Charmed Utility Room, indeed! I love, love, love what you've done with the tiny space! That table is amazing! A lace table runner for a curtain...gorgeous! The wall left blank truly shows the Farmhouse Style, perfectly. A simpler life. Thank you for sharing this relaxed way of living post!

  2. This IS a different look from you but just as pleasing and well done! I love the primitive look of the box and jar. The lace runner makes a perfect curtain for that window.

  7. This is really my favorite look. I LOVE that Larkin wood soap box...and Buffalo, NY has special meaning for me too. That jar with its unique clasp is pretty cool as well! You did a great job in that little space and living in a tiny home myself...I have to ask...where did you put the step ladder? lol

  8. Mundane my fanny. It is farmhouse elegant, with the lace and all. Really less than seven ingredients and your brilliant style was all it took.

  16. What a pretty little room now! I love the idea of hanging the lace runner. I have a tiny laundry room, but wish it had a window. I'll probably add a mirror to make it look bigger. Oh, and I ADORE that soap box! Thanks for sharing : ) Have a great weekend! ~Destiny

  18. What a pretty blog you have (I bopped over from finding you on June's blog)
I love all things vintage and country too.,
You were talking about small spaces....well
Our house is only 950 sq. feet, with a loft. Oooo, it is tiny. Sometimes I feel like I live in a thimble. But Me and hubby are recently married (2 1/2) years...looooong story, and so when I moved up here to Canada to be with him (he was my high school sweetheart) He already had the house built on his 1/4 section of land. So I didn't get to put in any input, he thought he'd just stay a bacelor. His dream fulfilled. anyway...I am rambling now.
anyway, I love what you did with that little room. The lace curtains are so pretty.

  21. Oh, be still my heart~~~I love this kind of renewal. It's perfect.
I giggled when I saw the two nails, hammer and lace. I did the same thing with the bright west window behind the back door. I love the transition.
As for plants, put up a simple wood slab half way up the window and voila', you have plant space.

  26. It looks perfect. That old crate is a great size larger and not as deep as many. I would leave the table as is--but I like the rustic look.

  27. I love it!!! What a great idea to use the lace runner as a curtain! The old wooden crate/box is wonderful also...I just love old wooden boxes with great graphics like that. I love to see creative ways to make use of small spaces while still making them look good!

  28. I love how you transformed that room, Jacqueline! And the lace runner provides the perfect touch, blocking the view and letting in a soft light. I use old lace runners as curtains too, in my 2 bathrooms and the kitchen. Stopping by your lovely blog is always inspiring. Take care.
